Lewis Award Holds Annual Dinner

The Lewis Award held its Annual Dinner to honor this year’s Lewis Award Recipient, the Finalists and all past Recipients of the Lewis Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Lifetime Achievement Award. The Dinner was held on May 7, 2011, in Raleigh.

Guest of Honor was Jack Viorel, 1st grade teacher at St. Mary School in Wilmington. Mr. Viorel, originally from California, has taught at St. Mary for five years. In addition to teaching his students in the classroom, he also teaches them about being involved in community activities. Through his surf school, Mr. Viorel provides individuals with disabilities opportunities which allow them to experience the enjoyment of activities not readily open to them. Some of his other civic involvements include the Boys and Girls Clubs, JDRF, Wounded Warriors, and other outreach projects.

In addition to Mr. Viorel, Mrs. Mary Barber, 5th Grade teacher at St. Egbert School in Morehead City, and Mr. Alan Johnston, 6th-8th Grade Science at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Raleigh, Finalists for the 2010-2011 Lewis Award, were recognized for their outstanding commitment to Catholic education. Other special guests were Mrs. Joyce Price, Principal, St. Mary School, and Mr. John Donohue, Principal of St. Egbert School.
